Whether you’re trying to fix a leak, replace a part or upgrade your bathroom, identifying your toilet correctly can save time, money and frustration.

Here’s how to quickly work it out.

1. Check Inside the Cistern

Lift the lid off your toilet cistern and look inside. This is the most reliable way to identify your toilet.

Look for:

  • Brand name (Caroma, Fowler, etc.)

  • Model number stamped into the ceramic

  • Manufacturing codes

Most toilets in Australia will have markings inside the tank.

2. Look for External Branding

If there are no markings inside, check the outside of the toilet.

Look around:

  • Behind the seat hinges

  • Around the base of the bowl

  • Under the lid

Older toilets may have faded or hidden logos, so check carefully.

3. Identify the Flush Type

Your flush system helps narrow down the model and parts required.

Common types include:

  • Dual flush buttons (most modern toilets)

  • Single flush lever or button (older systems)

  • Concealed in-wall cisterns

Each type uses different internal components.

4. Check the Toilet Style

The shape and installation style also help identify your toilet.

Common styles in Melbourne homes:

  • Close-coupled

  • Back-to-wall

  • Wall-hung

  • Skew trap (common in older homes)

Knowing the type helps avoid ordering the wrong parts.
